After all the efforts to get the Gili islands and the surrounding areas recognized and made officially a marine park called the Gili Matra Marine Park, and the efforts to get the very needed electric upgrade
e by cable from the Lombok mainland of 10 megawatts of additional power,a report in the Antara News Agency writes that plans to lay the undersea power line to the Gili Air, Meno and Trawanagan island group has been suspended on the orders of the West Nusa Tenggara province.
The power line project was first commenced in 2011 and installed to Gili Air and unfortunately almost immediately broke.
The head of the State Power Board Mining and Energy Agency has reportedly claimed that the project will now be suspended until further notice.
The suspension is a major blow to residents and businesses on the three Gilis, reportedly because of the result of concerns that the power line may be putting three reef areas of the Gili Matra Marine Park under an unspecified environmental threat!
The explanation that the State Power Board known who was laying the power line, is compelled to follow the laws and obtain special permission before resuming construction in the sensitive environmental zone.
Surely this should have been done before the project was started, or if the timing of the allocation of the recognition of the Gili Matra Marine Park was after the start of the laying of the cable, this special permission should have been applied for and obtained at that time.
