September, 21, 2010 - 06:27AM

We would like to inform you about our next clean up program for September and ask all visitors to the Gili Islands if you would like to join the program for a cleaner and greener Gili Trawangan.

We are starting today to clean the back of the island: the village, around the rubbish dump area, the lesser developed west and southern beaches of the island, and around the bottom of the hill.

The Gili Eco Trust’s own Cidomo (open horse cart) with 3 people will work everyday in the morning collecting plastic and other rubbish. They will bring everything to the rubbish dump (TPA).
Hopefully we can then clean everything, seperate recyclebale materials and at the same time teach both visitors and local residents about the huge impact of waste rubbish (at the same time).

The event will take place on the 24th and 25th of September 2010, it will be our second International shoreline and Underwater clean up Days.

We have organised with the school, the youth from Gili Trawangan (Remaja), Pak Nur’s cikar cooperasi, FMPL, Acok and Sama Sama; and we would like to ask you all for your support too.

Attention Divers – For the dive shops: please can you confirm that you are all prepared to support the underwater clean up to provide a free dive to certified divers who would clean the beach or village first? I will bring you some plastic bags and gloves if you agree to join the event. (This is the same program that we hold every first friday of the month but this time we will do the clean up for 2 days instead of only 1, due the amount of rubbish created during August’s high season)

For business owners: if you want to join the event, which we think everyone should,  we think you can also give a present such as a drink, snack or a meal. (Any other ideas gratefully welcome) to the guests who would like to clean up too, but who are non divers. You can make some tickets for the people who would like to join the clean up and they will receive a present after coming back with a bag full of non-organic rubbish.
Please let me know if you want to join so I can put your name on the posters and give you some plastic bags and gloves.

After these 2 days cleaning, the Gili Eco Trust will organise a party at Sama Sama Bar from 6pm onwards on the 25th September 2010 with free snacks for everyone who helped participate to clean the island of Gili Trawangan.

This event is not only for tourists, anyone at all can join in, it is very satisfing to see the island before and especially afterwards, as this is a huge push over 2 full days.

The school kids with the youth of Gili Trawangan will clean mostly the village and the back of the village. We will give you some directions on where to send your guests for cleaning.

Thank you for your continued support and contribution to keeping our island a clean and healthy place to visit.
