Well what can I say about Gili Trawangan Island near Lombok. It had a comfortable expat feel with welcoming and friendly locals. Probably the best diving that I’ve done so far. On one dive, I saw seven black tip reef sharks and a white tip shark. Also, I glimpsed some of the most amazing creatures that must exist in the ocean – an ornate ghost pipefish and a pygmy sea horse (half the size of a finger nail and symbiotically bonded with the coral to make them almost invisible!). The island is only about 6x9km and you can walk all the way round it on the palm tree fringed beach track in a couple of hours. It has great food, great bars and great nightclubs. I spent the time partying and diving with an interesting and crazy bunch – a music producer from LA, a pilot from Guam, a natural disaster aid worker, Phil from the Gili Paradise shop, and the great team from Manta Dive.
