Dear friends and divers,
As you all know, in 2005 I obtained the unnofficial world record for the longest open salt water scuba dive, lasting 24hrs 3mins. Many of you were in some way involved in this and without your help and support this would never have been possible. I am writing to you all to let you know that I am planning to attempt a new world record sanctioned by Guinness World Records TM, and in accordance with rules laid down by them. It is my intention to raise funds for the local school here on Gili Trawangan.
The island is very small with limited educational opportunities and many children come from families with an average wage of $25 per week. Parents struggle to provide clothing, books and teaching materials as well as an acceptable standard of education resulting in many children ending their schooling at a very young age. All money raised from my next dive will go directly into an initiative for the benefit of children on the island in a move towards being able to provide them with a brighter future.
I am planning to enter the water on the morning of Monday 14 April 2008 and remain submerged for 100hrs. The dive will be made using a combination of rebreather and open circuit systems to maximum depth of 12 metres with no physical contact with the surface. Support teams for this dive will encompass divers from around the island as well as specialists from around the world in the dive community. Equipment and surface logistics will be organised once again by Blue Marlin and Trawangan Dive with full support from members of the Gili Eco Trust based on Gili Trawangan.
The event is expected to covered by international media, dive institutions and magazines and a documentary program sponsored by Red Pepper Productions may be filmed. Although many of you are already planning to attend as a part of my support crew, I am at this stage looking for donations and sponsorship. If any of you would be interested in supporting this cause please let me know and I will provide you with further details of fund raising, both through one off donations or hourly sponsorship. Any contribution to this cause will be greatly appreciated, not only by myself but by the children of Trawangan. Further details and updates can be found on my website, www.goodwilldiving.com. I look forward to hearing from you shortly and wish you all a fantastic Christmas and New Year.
